Serotek raises a glass in celebration of GW Micro’s latest achievement. The recently announced partnership between gW Micro and Microsoft marks the beginning of a new chapter in assistive technology history, and the team at Serotek applauds a huge step forward that can only bring positive benefits to the blind consumer. Speaking about the recent announcement, Serotek’s CEO, Michael Fox, had this to say. “There is a misconception that in an industry with very few players, there must surely be a great deal of animosity between companies. In reality, nothing is further from the truth. While I’ve only been CEO at Serotek since August of 2013, I’ve had the pleasure of interacting with representatives of numerous companies within the assistive technology industry for the past 11 years. Without a doubt, the folks at GW Micro stand out for their class, their sincerity, and their dedication to serving the needs of the blind community. Maybe it seems strange that Serotek would so enthusiastically applaud the success of a competitor, but it shouldn’t seem strange at all. Serotek was founded by a blind person, is staffed predominately by blind people, and is dedicated to creating a better … [Read more...] about A Toast to GW Micro

At Serotek, accessibility is our bread and butter. When we jumpstarted this operation in 2002, we came to the table with our own approach to the well-known issue of expensive assistive technology. We were on fire, and never mind that all odds were stacked against us. By conventional standards Serotek Corporation should have collapsed after the first year, not just because this is true of more than 50% of all companies, but because we were the little fish swimming in a small pond with large sharks. Enough of you gave us your support and allowed us to bring to the market our own version of “affordable technology.” As we close the books on another calendar year, I am pleased to report that our story is still a bestseller. Let’s take a quick look back at some of our accomplishments. Among other things, we: Rolled out a fresh website to better serve you; Worked hard to make your experience on Windows 8, 8.1 and Office 2013 a positive experience; Continued improving System Access based on your valuable feedback and continued to provide updates with no software maintenance agreements; Introduced the new and improved >Socializer, bringing you seamless access to Twitter, Facebook, … [Read more...] about Seasons Greetings From Your Serotek Family
Nothing kicks off the holiday season like Thanksgiving. Think about it: food, football, door buster deals, parades and plenty of justification for the Christmas decorations you never took down! Well, this year, Serotek is going to add one more bonus to make the gateway holiday even more memorable than usual. Perhaps we should have come up with a cool marketing name for this special deal. But then, what do you call fourteen days of free, unfiltered, use all you can, where ever you want, whenever you want access to all of our Serotek consumer products? That’s right. Starting Wednesday, November 27 you’ll be able to e-mail, chat, scan, entertain and socialize to your heart’s content. Existing customers do not need to contact us for trial access to products they do not own or subscribe to. The whole idea is that anyone can tap into our growing menu of services for the undisputed king of prices: FREE! Self-restraint? What self-restraint. Some of us have already bought gadgets we probably didn’t need, but DocuScan Plus will be right there to turn that printed manual into spoken word. And speaking of word, go ahead and spread this one: Socializer is a fully-featured platform that lets you … [Read more...] about Ringing in the Holidays with a Special Promotion!
Hello everyone, Fall is in the air. The leaves are changing, it’s growing colder outside, and for whatever reason the combination of it all seems to prompt tech companies to release major updates to their products. I suppose curling up by the fire and downloading a new operating system for your device is one way to usher in a new season. Over the past month we’ve seen major updates including Apple’s iOS 7 and Mavericks, Microsoft’s update for Windows 8.1, as well as an announcement for a new version of Android by the end of October. As a cross-platform company with products running on each of these operating systems, Serotek has kept busy making sure everything is working perfectly with each of the new updates on the day those updates are released. With all that, we still managed to find some time to add a few features to our own products, and the good news for you is that we’ll keep on adding features and enhancements year round. Here’s just a little of what we’ve done in the past month. We’ve made it easier for you to tell your friends about Serotek products and services, and make a little money in the process. We’ve further enhanced the Serotek Socializer, adding Skypeout … [Read more...] about A Fresh Season of Updates
In my last post I alluded to an upcoming opportunity to reward those of you who help promote our products and services. We’ve hammered out the details, and I am proud to announce the launch of the Serotek Ambassadors’ Club. The Serotek Ambassadors’ Club allows you to make extra money for signing up new customers to designated products. We’ll give you a unique URL you can use in your websites, blogs and social networks to direct customers to our website. If the new customer makes an eligible purchase, you get a percentage of the sale. Interested in further details? You can read our FAQ to learn how the program works. You can also listen to this audio walkthrough for an overview of the Ambassadors’ Club. And if you are a current customer, you can jump right in by choosing the “My Account” option in your Serotek software and navigating to the new Serotek Ambassadors’ Club link to get started. At Serotek we are blessed with a community that independently promotes our products and services. Curiosity may’ve killed the cat, but the satisfaction of experimenting with great features and low prices brought the beast back. That’s the fuel that’s kept the Serotek engine humming these past eleven years. There’s a reason that clichés exist, and it’s because they usually contain a lot of truth. “Time flies when you’re having fun.” I can certainly relate to that as I reflect on all that the Serotek team has accomplished recently. I’m astounded to realize I’m only in my fourth week as CEO of this company. In my first post to this community, I made some pretty bold statements when talking about my goals for Serotek, and I’m proud to say that in these past four weeks we’ve made an impressive start to accomplishing those goals. We began by concentrating our efforts on System Access, and here are just a few of the things we fixed. System Access now reads the list of email addresses available for autocompletion in Microsoft Outlook. Users can now choose from the list of email accounts in Microsoft Outlook from which to send a new message. Enhanced the "Some" punctuation level to speak the Equal and Asterisk symbols. Fixed a bug where the Eloquence speech synthesizer would … [Read more...] about Truth in Cliches
My name is Michael Fox and this is my first, though certainly not last, post to the Serotek blog. As many of you already know from having read the blog post from Mike Calvo, there has been a change in leadership at Serotek. Since Mr. Calvo made the announcement that he would be taking over as executive director of the AIR Foundation and I would be assuming the role of CEO at Serotek, we have had a tremendous outpouring of support from the community. We’re both extremely grateful for that support, and I want to thank all of you who have welcomed me so warmly to this new role, and to this community. Still, when most people hear about change, even if that change appears to be positive, there is always a sense of trepidation. No one likes thinking about the possibility that something they’ve grown to depend on might be altered in some fundamental way. I won’t put your mind at ease by telling you there won’t be any changes, because there certainly will be. For a company who strives to remain innovative and at the top of its game, change is a necessary component. I will, however, promise that certain things within Serotek will remain the same. Primarily, this company was founded with a … [Read more...] about Moving Forward
If you’ve followed this blog, or watched me on Facebook or Twitter, or if you've known me personally for any length of time, you know that I don’t do anything in halves. Whether I’m teaching a Bible study, conducting a podcast or even visiting Disney World with my kids, I am focused on that activity with my heart and soul, to the exclusion of all else. You also might have noticed that I never back away from a challenge. In fact, I thrive on situations where the odds are long and the goal seems all but impossible to achieve. Some might call that boundless energy and enthusiasm, and some might call it just plain crazy. Whatever you call it, that inexhaustible passion and willingness to challenge the status quo have served me very well throughout my life. I can vividly remember flying to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2001 to meet with a group of business people. As I stepped on the plane, I had a moment or two where I questioned what exactly I thought I was doing. I was a young guy with a growing family, and while I had been an entrepreneur since I was thirteen, I’d never walked in to a boardroom before. I wasn’t even a high school graduate. How could I possibly think I could walk in to … [Read more...] about The Next Chapter
