Mastodon: We read you loud and clear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We are pleased to announce that we have officially established our presence on the Fediverse via a Mastodon server<\/a> linked to Pneuma Solutions. A number of our staff may now be reached via Mastodon, and we invite you to follow us to stay in the know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New to Mastodon?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No problem! Look to this very well written guide to Mastodon for newcomers courtesy of Amanda Carson and World Blind Herald.<\/a>
Fortunately, there are a number of accessible apps that will make your experience enjoyable. We recommend the Semaphore web client, <\/a>TweeseCake (Windows and Mac)<\/a> or TW Blue for Windows,<\/a>Mona for Mac and IOS,<\/a>en Tusky for Android.<\/a>All of these apps, be they assistive or mainstream apps, have one thing in common. Extremely good accessibility, particularly when it comes to Mona and Tusky\u2019s excellent use of VoiceOver and Talkback\u2019s capabilities. Regardless of which platform you use, you\u2019re sure to find something that works for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Mastodon?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re glad you asked! As many of you may be aware, Twitter\u2019s accessibility has taken a nosedive since the layoff of a majority of their staff, which included a hardworking accessibility team. The API endpoints that allowed accessible third party applications (including our own Sero Socializer) to utilize Twitter have been decommissioned. With the accessibility team gone, many visually impaired Twitter users \u2013 ourselves included \u2013 cannot trust the apps and websites to retain any currently existing accessibility for the foreseeable future. Many well known voices in the community have implored access technology companies to relocate to this platform<\/a> due to the higher degree of accessibility. In light of all of this, we are joining the folks from NVAccess,<\/a> AppleVis, <\/a>Top Tech Tidbits,<\/a> etc. in fully embracing the fediverse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it gets better!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We are looking to leverage this platform in ways never possible with previous social platforms. As you can see thanks to the existence of our own server, Mastodon is an open platform. Among other things, this will allow us to give our long-time community members something more future-proof and integrated than ever before. Stay tuned for more updates, as the best is yet to come.
